So I recently read that smelly candles cause cancer.
God damn. What doesn't cause cancer anyway?? Nothing, that's what.
I enjoy a good smelly candle! So now apparently I have to buy a special kind of smelly candle that doesn't have the toxic chemicals in the wax or fragrance or something, toxic chemicals that are probably slowly killing me and my family when all I wanted was a nice smelling house. Run on sentence much?
Did I ever tell you that someone once told me that my house always smells great? That made my day. Because I think it smells pretty great, but you know how sometimes you just get used to something and have no idea that it's probably gross? I have a smelly uncle and there is no way that he goes through life thinking he smells good. No way. I think he is opposed to deodorant, but anyway, either he is just so used to being surrounded by his own stench or he doesn't care about the weak constitution of others who may be in his presence. Maybe he should think about other people's nose holes.
I got off track.
Back to smelly candles. So now I feel like I have to burn out all of the smelly candles because it would be a crime to throw good candles away, right? They're so freaking expensive! I guess tossing them is probably the smart, responsible thing to do. How can you ignore the fact that some of those chemicals that are wafting around the room smelling all yummy are actually about as bad for you as second hand smoke?? It's the freaking Paraffin. Most scented candles are made of paraffin wax, which actually turns into carcinogens when it's burned. Read up on that guys, because it really isn't a good thing.
So there's that.
I checked into an alternative. Because you know, I like to be informed, and I like to not consciously surround my kids in apple pie scented carcinogens. I guess soy candles and beeswax candles are good substitutes. I haven't gotten any yet myself, but I am going to check out The Honest Company's soy candles, because that Jessica Alba seems to put out some decent quality products. There are 3 different scents available, I think I have seen them at Target. I hope they smell decent because damn, they are like $20 each.
I'll let you know how it goes!

what the eff?
There's really only one thing about fall that I can't stand. The fucking fall fundraisers. Or, as I like to refer to them, the FFF.
Fine, I don't refer to them as the FFF, but they are so annoying! Maybe it's just me. But really? Come on, they have a whole assembly to show all of the kids the super cool awesome prizes they can win if they sell only 299 rolls of wrapping paper! So then I have to break the news to my kid that she won't be selling 299 rolls of wrapping paper, because who buys wrapping paper for $4.99 a roll?! And, and you guys? You know that $4.99 roll of wrapping paper that you just bought? Well, it wraps about 3 presents!! Seriously, have you ever seen what it looks like under my tree on Christmas morning? $4.99 rolls of wrapping paper are not going to cut it here.
Sometimes, I try the old sneak and toss method, where I just sneakily toss the whole fundraising packet, and if the kids remember about it before it needs to be turned in, I claim ignorance. Sometimes you just have to do that.
You know, I get fundraisers. I understand why they do them. I just don't like them. I think, you know, I pay my school taxes. And I pay a lot! Why can't that be enough? They should make it really clear that the fundraisers are optional. Because you know what ends up happening every damn time?? I feel guilty and buy the cute checkbook cover, the huge tub of cookie dough, a roll of effing $4.99 wrapping paper and a key chain, spending approximately $89.00 on junk that I will never use (except the huge tub of cookie dough. who am I kidding. mmm), all so my kid can get a crappy plastic necklace prize that will break way before she loses it. Like in ten minutes. So, in other words, I just spent $89 on a cheap plastic kid's necklace.
Huh? I don't even spend $89 on a necklace for myself! Well. Except that one time when I bought myself that fantastic necklace from Tiffany's by accident. But whatever! You know what I mean!
Here's the kicker, which is maybe why I get so annoyed by fundraisers in general. I have 3 kids in school. I get those packets from each kid twice a year (minimum!). That means I have to deal with that crap SIX TIMES a school year. And that's only the school fundraiser! Last week I got two dance class fundraisers and a soccer fundraiser! My Cod. I cant even keep up anymore!
Anyway, that's my rant for the day. Sorry. I'll move on now.

well, that irritates.
I know I've mentioned this before, but I'm kind of chill. Well, on the outside. On the outside I'm kind of chill. On the inside, well that is just another story for another time. But you know, I try to be kind. Usually it's not too hard to be kind, because most people are decent. But then there are people who are just assholes. Those people I have no tolerance for, and I hate when I am forced to devote even one minute of my life to them - in any form. Most often, the form of me mentally fuming over something that happened that I couldn't respond to properly, or me being forced to be in some rude jerk's presence and remain polite.
Tell me if these things bug you too, or if it's just me, being irrational and expecting too much from others.
You know how when you are talking to someone, then all of a sudden, you realize that they were paying way more attention to their cell phone or iPad than to you?
Or that entitled guy who believes that he deserves a better spot in the line than everyone else.
Or when you are being kind, and someone ignores your gesture.
Then there are the smokers that seem to congregate at the door of every establishment. I get it, I actually kind of feel sorry that the smokers are banished to the cold outdoors to do their business, but I can't stand coughing my way through their stinky, smokey cloud on the way to my doctor's appointment. And then of course you smell like you're the smoker.
Tell me if these things bug you too, or if it's just me, being irrational and expecting too much from others.

you googled that?? part two
OK, another edition of you googled that? Because people are freaking weird. And I'm a little concerned that their weirdness brought them to my innocent little boring old blog.
So these two gems were recently googled, "can sloths eat dough?" and "supermodels with camel toes," and they were directed to my blog. This post in particular. Geez. And, omg. Sherilin totally called it - she said I'd get a bunch of pervy pervs searching for gross things, and she was right.

Someone searched "i hate blowing my nose," and got sent to this post. To the one who googled that, I feel ya sister.
I don't really get "mothers who teach their daughters to go braless." I mean yes, I said bra-less, but not in the respect that I was trying to teach my kid to go without. I thought that post was about Boss Hogg and teachers.
Someone googled "Corey Haim dirty movie bucker" and found their way to this post about my top ten 80's teen crushes. Well I did discuss Corey Haim, but I didn't call him a dirty bucker. Whatever that means.
"Close talkers" could have brought someone to several of my posts, because I mention it every so often because it is a thing that really bugs me. But they were sent here, to my post about... you guessed it! Close talkers!
OK, so in searching "hairy guys in leather jackets," someone was sent to this post, where I discuss in detail a bunch of sucky dates that I have been on in the past. One of the sucky dates was with a super hairy guy, and another one was with a guy in a green pleather jacket. So yeah. Makes sense.
"False girdle advertisements" and "Bombshell Bra" understandably came to this post, where I talk about SPANX and the fact that wearing them is technically false advertisement if you're trying to pick up a guy.
So sheesh. It's kind of interesting and disturbing to see what terms are bringing people to your blog. So like, if you've made your way here and you're freaking weird, you can go now. Thanks.

random things that bug me
Every so often I jot down things that bug me, and when I get enough things to merit a post, I share. So.
It bugs me when people put a line through their sevens and zeros. Like, are you that concerned that we will not recognize that it is, in fact a seven (or zero)? Does that line really mean anything anyway? Somebody mentioned this the other day and I thought to myself that I completely concur.
Once again, price labels on glass surfaces. Really? There is no other possible place to put the label? Like perhaps the back side or bottom of a thing? It almost feels like the labelers are purposely mocking me and all of the other shoppers.
It bugs me when you spit your gum out in the parking lot. On the ground. Where other people walk. Come on. Someone is going to step on it and track it into their car. And that someone will probably be me. Not cool.
It bugs me when people say supposubly. As opposed to supposedly. Please, please for the love of bacon, supposubly is not a word. A worse offense is aks instead of ask, or fustrated instead of frustrated. Why? Ugh.
It bugs me when I find half drunk (drinken? drank? help me.) can of seltzer around. I am not one to stick my nose up at a half drunk (?) can of seltzer, because I am all about conserving the seltzer, but we all know that it will be flat by the second day so basically it is a totally wrecked can of seltzer. Lets all say this together: just say no to sandbagging.
It bugs me when I squeeze mustard onto a lovely ham and cheese sandwich and a mustard dribble comes out. Like a watery dribble of mustard juice. WTF? Now my bread is soggy! How am I even supposed to proceed at this point?

Don't you think that the way segue is spelled is like, not natural? Who made up that dumb word anyway? And why would they spell it in such a way that nobody knows how to pronounce it? Is it seh-gue? Seg-way? Seg? SEEG? I'm going to go figure it out.
OK, I checked. It is seg-way according to the dictionary. I think I always knew that, but it feels so awkward to say, don't you think? Sort of like bask.
Well there you have it - another edition of things that bug me. Have any of your own to add?

wtf. cookie dough, sexy shoulders, supermodels and camel toes
A bunch of misc things:
*Remember that time I was all, wtf blogger?? That was back when blogger lost several of my unfinished and unposted posts out there somewhere and I was semi-freaking and peeved because one or two of them may have actually been entertaining, informative and/or interesting. Or not. But whatever. Uh, still pissed about that blogger, because I'm pretty sure I never got those posts back...
But ANYWAY, so like, is it just me or did blogger go and change everything without mentioning it? Like seriously, wtf? I feel confused. I don't like change when I don't ask for it. I don't want to go all Facebook-timeline postal or anything, but man... can't I have a choice? How about a heads up at least? I don't like it. I'm sure I'll get used to it and get over it, but I am not digging it at the moment.
*I am so in the mood to make cookie dough and eat it right now... better yet, how about you make me a batch of cookie dough, then I'll come over, and when I get there we will have a slow motion hug and eat the whole damn bowl like the ravenous sloths we are.
*Also, guess what? I went to the movies this afternoon - yes, by myself - no, I don't mind, I kind of enjoy it. I got popcorn with butter and Raisinets and a blue frosty. It was all very exciting. Spending $20 bucks on a movie and movie food wasn't very exciting, but just going and eating crappy junk food was. I went to see a new release movie that got sucky reviews. Can you guess what it was? What if I mention that it was a total girl movie and the guy lead is so very, very appealing, in a 25 year old ridiculously HOT kid kind of way...
Yep, it was The Lucky One. I'm not sure about reviewing it here - I hate to give my opinion on movies and books actually. In fact, I'm not a big fan of endorsing much of anything. Like, what if I say, it was so great! Go see/read/eat/look at it! and everyone is like, really? she has the lamest taste ever! All I will say is this, throughout the movie I was constantly asking myself, "What did he just say?" because I couldn't hear him over how awesome his beard is. I am so attracted to a cute beard. And beautiful abs. And sexy shoulders... OK ok! Moving on.
*I recently read this article where Elle McPherson (the 50-year-old supermodel) said that she stresses over trying on bathing suits in stores, so instead of trying them on there, she has them shipped to her. I was like, huh. She is amazingly attractive, still totally rocking a supermodel bod. It's so funny to think of a women who like, 98% of the public thinks is perfect, has fears about what she looks like. I mean, I absolutely abhor trying on bathing suits - abhor even wearing them in fact, but I am so far removed from looking nice in a bathing suit that it's understandable. Elle McPherson feeling self conscious is just crazy talk.
*I just want to point out how shocking it is the way people will answer a door these days. If you drop by and I answer the door in skin tight leggings with a camel toe, or a sheer t-shirt with no bra, please slap my face. I don't care if you come over unannounced. There is no excuse for such a thing. Like, ever.
OK, I'm done.

wtf walt disney
Have you ever taken a moment and just thought what exactly the five classic Disney movie/stories are really about? I mean, honestly, it just occurred to me that they are all pretty dark and demented and rather scary.
I guess I always knew Bambi was scary. Like hello? Who thought that a story about a sweet little baby deer witnessing his mom get a cap in her ass was a great idea? Was that Walt's great idea? Well if it was, who knew Walt had such a skewed idea of what was an appropriate bedtime tale for your average kid.
And Dumbo. Poor Dumbo. So someone also thought it was a good idea to write a story about an elephant that everyone else made fun of. Those jerk bully animals teased poor Dumbo about his big ears. It must have been during a time period before the "pinning your ears back" plastic surgery was all the rage. And his name... Dumbo. As in DUMB-bo. How's that for your self-esteem, kid? And then the mean guys go ahead and lock his mom in a cage and call her a crazy. Were these stories supposed to put kids to sleep? Because, um. I'm thinking no.
Then we have Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. First of all, of course Snow White is a slave-maid to her mean old stepmother/Queen. Then we find out that the stepmother/Queen is actually a jealous murderous betch who tells this lumberjack guy to go and cut SW's heart out and put it in a box. Very Jack the Ripper-ish. Somehow I'm finding it hard to believe that at this point my five year old would be dozing off peacefully while sucking her thumb.
Anyway, then we find out that Snow White runs away and breaks into a house owned by a bunch of weird little guys who seem to do a lot of simultaneous and irritating whistling. So apparently she's a juvenile delinquent slave-maid. Finally, the story ends with the stepmother poisoning poor Snow White, then the stepmother subsequently falls to her death and gets herself mashed by a huge rock. Yeahyeah, Snow White lives happily ever after, probably suffering PTSD and heavily medicated, but still, happily ever after. Once again, that's some scary shit, Walt. Did you not have kids of your own?
All I am going to say about Fantasia is that not only was Walt dark and scary, I am pretty sure he was a stoner too. If you ever actually get the gumption to watch Fantasia, you're definitely going to want to get high. The attraction at Disney World? Super cool, a must-see. The movie? Weird as shit. And rather long and tedious.
And last but not least, Pinocchio. You know, the kid/puppet who is a damn liar. And have you ever heard of Pleasure Island? (wink wink) It seems like little Pinocchio may have also been a perv. So pretty much Pinocchio is a pervy wooden puppet, who turns into a naughty boy with a big nose who turns into a half-ass/donkey who turns back into a puppet and then gets eaten by a whale. Seriously Walt? Who makes this stuff up?
I have a lot more to say about the rest of those Disney movies, but frankly, I am feeling slightly traumatized by accidentally reviewing these particular five classics. I'm tapping out of this post. I will continue with my review of the next five Disney movies at a later date.
You're welcome.

It's not me, it's you. Online dating shocker.
So about online dating.
I was talking with someone this weekend who is currently doing the online dating thing and has had the most hysterical, disgusting and scary stories about her experiences. She typically goes on several dates a week, and so far so bad pretty much.
She has met some nice guys, no keepers, but it seems like the majority of them are players, looking for a quick hook up. In fact, just last week she went on a lunch date with someone -- first date -- they had a nice lunch and good conversation. He was driving her back to work when all of a sudden, he unzipped his pants and sort of took out his business. Right there, as he was driving. First of all, Who does that???! And secondly, how did he manage to maneuver himself in such a way that it was even comfortably possible? I mean, I know I have been out of the dating scene for like, fifteen years or so, but that can't be the norm these days. I don't care how many dates we've been on, if you are going to expose yourself to me like a perv, it's pretty much a deal breaker. Like immediately.
He seemed a little surprised when she asked him to put his business back where it belonged, and then even more shocked when she emphatically told him she was not even remotely interested in hooking up. I'm kind of curious to know if that approach has ever worked for him before. And when she told me this story, I was a little afraid for her life because that scene just reeks of serial killer.
I've suggested she write a blog detailing her crazy experiences. And trust me, this story is just the tip of the iceberg.
She's strong, funny, fun, sociable, attractive -- actually a great person all around. She started the online dating stuff because after a divorce, she moved far from home to a town where she knew pretty much a tiny handful of people. She is sociable, and having friends and hanging out is important to her. It just seems so hard to meet nice, mature people in a "normal" environment these days.
So anyway, I think she should quit the online dating stuff. It's definitely been great fodder - and great to laugh at her and also with her about the oh so awkward situations she has ended up in, but I have to admit I am a little scared for her life.

richard beheaded bob. no really.
So a funny thing happened the other day.
My sister told me how she had been chatting with her friend (lets call her) Bob, and Bob told my sister that she went to facebook a mutual friend, (let's call her) Richard to see if Richard's kid could come over for a play date.
You know, because really, what is a better way to communicate in this day and age than facebook?
Personally, I hate talking on the phone. I am not a phone chatter, so the facebook and the texting helps make me a happier, more communicative person. And less of a person who ignores responding to a back log of phone messages.
So back to Bob and Richard. Bob and Richard have known each other for years, and their kids are in the same grade and are friends. So Bob goes to facebook Richard, and realizes that she's been inexplicably defriended. Richard defriended Bob for no apparent reason. I mean, WTF Richard? So needless to say, the playdate was a little more difficult to make happen. And maybe a feeling or two ended up getting hurt there.
Hm.
So how do you decide if defriending someone is offensive or not?
I got defriended before. I have to admit I was a little offended. At first I couldn't decide if I was offended or relieved. Then I was all, "That asshat that I haven't spoken with since 11th grade defriended me?? Who does he think he is??" And now it's all awkward when I walk past him in the Grand Union. But whatever, at least he has the balls that I don't. I mean literally and figuratively, because you know, I don't really have balls. And I also don't really have the balls to defriend people. Mostly because I don't like to hurt people's feelings. Who knew I was so nice?
Facebook is a tough thing. You start up with it, you get excited to reconnect, you get all feeling like you're popular because you have 276 friends. Woo hoo! Then you realize that you kind of lost contact with most of those "friends" for a reason. Like, maybe they weren't really your friends to begin with. So initially you get caught up in the whole thing but then you find yourself stuck with friends who aren't your friends, and you really aren't sure if you want them looking at that adorable picture of your placenta.
FYI, I never posted an adorable picture of my placenta. I may actually gag at the thought. I've heard that people have posted pictures of their placentas and other miscellaneous disgusting things and I'm not really sure why. I mean, I'm sure my placentas were as adorable as everyone else's placentas, but for the love of Cod, someone please tell me why we would post such things?
Anyway, I don't really think there is a delicate way to defriend someone. I've just really learned about the ways to make certain things private, and I use those features for people I don't feel close enough to share everything with.
Not that I'm hugely into facebook or anything. But it really does make a playdate set-up happen effortlessly.
And I am all about effortlessly. It is almost my favorite word.
** You know, blogger really needs to get with the times and make some updates. The word defriend is a word of the times, right? I mean, it's a facebook word. It's got to be in the dictionary, and blogger spellcheck keeps giving me options to change it to befriend or behead. Come to think of it, this post would have been a lot more interesting if I initially said that Richard beheaded Bob. Don't you think?
